A family history spanning four generations unfolds German history on the Baltic coast – from the Weimar Republic to the fall of the Berlin Wall and into the present day. Hundreds of animations created from ink drawings are paired with documentary archive material and newly filmed scenes to form a montage that does not follow official historiography but rather foregrounds the individual perceptions and experiences of women connected across borders.
The film is autobiographically inspired and yet an exemplary story from northern Germany. Embedded in a larger European context, it brings recent German history to life, beginning in the 1920s and continuing to the present day.
